SillyTavern: Make AI Output Chinese Stories
In the previous story, I started the entire Chinese-language story with the first line "I can only understand Chinese."
https://imghost.lvedong.eu.org/Seraphina-月影草的故事.pdf
On one hand, this is a bit immersion-breaking; on the other hand, if every story has to start this way, wouldn't you find it a bit annoying?
There's also another thing: when a character's "Character Description" and "First Message" are in long English paragraphs, even if the user sends a first message saying "output in Chinese," the AI might still produce English or a mix of Chinese and English.
Let's explore other ways to make the tavern generate Chinese-language stories.
Method 1
Earlier we explored the actual data format that SillyTavern uses to communicate with the AI.
The AI "continues writing" a passage based on the content we send to it.
So if the data we send to the AI is in Chinese, then the content the AI "continues writing" will also be in Chinese.
Following this idea, we translate the tavern character's Character Description and First Message into Chinese.
Change it to the following (I just used some random machine translation and deliberately didn't fix it carefully—this is what a regular person would actually experience)
* Note that
Character Description
First Message
(A side note: this default character also comes with a World Info/lorebook, but we won't get into that for now)
Try saying the first line in Chinese. It feels much better.
Method 2
However, that said, translation isn't always accurate. A poor-quality translation might completely lose the original author's characterization of the character.
So if we want to keep the original English character information, how can we tell Chinese stories with the AI?
From the SillyTavern data format, you can see that the Character Description is the last section sent to the AI, and it gets sent every time.
So we add a line like this at the very beginning of the Character Description section.
{{char}}用中文输出全部信息
Like this
It's equivalent to reminding the AI every time: "output all information in Chinese"Let's try it out. You can see the effect is pretty good (left side); the command line display shows the instruction to use Chinese added (right side).
Fixing Unexpected Situations
After using the methods above, the AI will still occasionally slip in one or two non-Chinese words—usually English, but I've also run into Russian, Korean, etc. When you encounter this situation, you can edit the paragraph generated by the AI and replace those non-Chinese words.
Then continue using the tavern.

update
I found that in some cases, when there's too much English information in the character card, just a single line "{{char}}用中文输出全部信息" isn't strong enough—the spoken content will be in Chinese, but scene descriptions will be in English.
It can also output a passage in Chinese first, followed by an English translation.
So I experimented a bit more and found that the following works better

update
When using certain character cards, I noticed the generation sometimes gets stuck.
For example, with this character card.

In this case, switching the AI from Google Gemini to DeepSeek works much better.
