Reinstalling Hermes: Backing Up and Restoring Data and Ongoing Tasks

Preface

Got a Dedirock early on, storage is only 15G, installed Hermes, played around with it, disk space is down to just over 1G.

This isn't the first time disk space has been running low. Previously I just had Hermes analyze which folders could be cleaned, which caches could be deleted, and which logs could have their size limited.

Today it's really not working anymore, I think I'll just reinstall.

Environment

This VPS also has a proxy installed, but backing up and restoring it is a piece of cake.

https://zelikk.blogspot.com/2025/04/backup-restore-caddy-v2ray-xray-hysteria2-config-domain.html

I have a long-term task on this Hermes, adding captions to images in my blog posts. (Hopefully it helps with SEO a bit)

Also translating to English, publishing to http://icdyct.blogspot.com/

So I need to back up the data for this task and then restore it.

Let me document this process.

Backup

Hermes connects to the free meituan/longcat-2.5-preview:free provided by Nous Portal
https://zelikk.blogspot.com/2026/04/free-mimimo-v2-pro-omni-hermes-stripe.html

The content in the following quote boxes are natural language commands I sent to the Agent

Regarding
logging into blogger api, operating blogger api, operating zelikk blog and icdyct blog, adding captions to images, translating Chinese to English
task,
find the corresponding session files in the session history,
find the scripts and data used on disk.

Package the files and directories you found in the previous step into a .tar.gz

* If you only have this one VPS, then you should download this archive to your own computer.
I have another VPS, so I transferred the archive to the other VPS. If you don't know how to do it, ask Google or AI, keywords 一台linux 给另一台linux 添加SSH密钥登录 , transfer files between two linux machines

Reinstalling Hermes

Official installation script

curl -fsSL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/NousResearch/hermes-agent/main/scripts/install.sh | bash

Select  Nous Portal official provider, select free model meituan/longcat-2.5-preview:free, configure telegram bot token.

Finally, adjust some settings all at once.

source ~/.bashrc && \
hermes config set session_reset.mode none && \
hermes config set display.platforms.telegram.streaming false && \
hermes config set telegram.reactions true && \
hermes config set security.redact_secrets false && \
hermes config set approvals.mode off && \
hermes gateway restart

*  If you want to know what the above does, ask Google or AI

Restore

First, move the archive to the VPS and extract it to the original location.

Then have Hermes recall the workflow based on historical session files, scripts, and other data.

You study these directories
blogger-content-automation
blogger-api
blogspot-seo-llm-template

Search in your own session directory for records about blogger api, zelikk, icdyct

Can you log into blogger now to check?

Confirm login permissions are fine

Recall how to handle new articles on zelikk
1. Find new articles on zelikk
2. Check if these articles have captions for images, if not, captions need to be added
2a. First use an image recognition model to write a draft caption
2b. Then you revise the draft caption based on the full article and the position of the image in the article
3. Translate the article to English, the content in pre and code is code, don't force translation.
4. icdyct blog, both Chinese and English should be published, with a 1-second difference between Chinese and English publication times.

Carefully checked the content recalled by the Agent, some models used need to be re-specified. For example, stealth/space-bunny-alpha is no longer available.

Then have the Agent actually work once, and this time each step needs to stop so I can check the intermediate results.
It really made me discover some more detail issues.

Alright, this round completed successfully. I had the Agent summarize and organize.

Good, work this way from now on.
Summarize the process yourself, check if the scripts used need updating.

Postscript

One more thing. I use Telegram to communicate with Hermes, so even though Hermes was reinstalled, the previous communication records are still in Telegram, very convenient to look up.

I also recorded the disk space usage.
